SOCIETY AND OPEN GOVERNANCE
Contemporary society is characterized by growing uncertainty, fragmentation and mutual depen- dency. This is caused by the transforming composition and stratification patterns of population, chan- ging lifestyles and values, as well as novel socio-economic forms of action and entrepreneurship models. Coping with these changes requires renewal of governance, institutions and the legal system.
We study the renewing societal processes and contribute to the development of the 21st century wel- fare society via modernisation of social institutions, governance and legal systems, as well as promo- ting well-being of communities and individuals. For this we combine political science, international relations, law, sociology, demography, strategic planning and future studies, as well as social work and social pedagogy. We develop new interdisciplinary and problem-centred research areas and elaborate relevant research technologies. We support the introduction of the practices of open governance at local government and national level. We offer research-based and innovative solutions for public ser- vice, politicians, legal practitioners and non-governmental organizations. We develop new strategies of intervention to enhance the well-being of individuals and their ability to cope. We contribute to the development of terminology in Estonian in social sciences, law and political sciences.
Within the university we support the development of the university into an example of open gover- nance and facilitate strengthening of the university’s position in promoting and leading social debates.
