CULTURAL COMPETENCES
In an increasingly globalized world we are more open than ever before to cultural, political and economic influences arising from very different societies, the historical developments of those societies and their traditions. Coping in an open multicultural world is an especially important challenge for smaller national cultures.
Considering the capability of Tallinn University in studying and mediating different cultures, languages, history and traditions, we are able to offer knowledge and skills related to different languages, world views and cultural traditions to all our students and more broadly to Estonian society.
In a culturally interwoven world the knowledge of Estonian history, preservation and development of the Estonian language and national culture require more extensive competences than before. At the same time we need to be able to embrace the new and value the old in the process of interacting and mediating with different cultures. One important task ahead for Tallinn University is the empirical and theoretical analysis of Estonian culture in the global context, in order to assure our cultural perseverance, along with the abilities of self-analysis and identity creation relevant in today´s world. Our aim is to help to develop an Estonian society that values languages, cultures and creativity. By fostering this approach, we help to create opportunities for the development of the Estonian cultural sphere in the wider social context and for the participation of every society member in the culture. We develop theories about cultural processes of meaning-making and cultural memory formation in Estonia and elsewhere. In order to achieve these goals, the university develops the studying and teaching of the Estonian language, history and culture, as well as language, culture, art, thinking traditions and the socio-economic environments of different nations. We integrate the knowledge of languages and cultures of different nations with cultural sciences to form an interdisciplinary whole.
It is important to us that the cultural competence of our staff and students is developed to cope better in the global world.
