1.3. CULTURAL COMPETENCES
1.3.1. Studies of cultural areas
a. We modernise and expand studies of different cultures by proficiency and analysis of all languages in the cultural area, the knowledge of history, skill of interpreting cultural heritage and texts, understanding of society and social institutions, analysis of collective values, behavioural patterns and traditions, as well as power relationships.
b. We develop the studies of cultural areas that have become increasingly important to us in the modern globalizing world, including the studies of Slavonic, Asian, Arabic and Latin American cultures.
c. We develop the studies of the Estonian language, literature and culture through a wide theoretical spectrum and broader cultural concept.
d. We develop the Estonian Studies study programme taught in English.
1.3.2. Historical and comparative cultural studies: interaction and influence of cultures on people and society
a. We conduct comparative cultural studies: we create the competence centre for the history and culture of the Baltic Sea region and develop the centres of medieval studies and environmental history.
b. We conduct interdisciplinary area studies of the mechanisms of cross- cultural dialogue, conflict, translation, borders and loans.
c. We develop the competence of the Estonian translation culture.
d. We develop and modernise language teaching and learning.
