„A lot depends on specialisa- tion, but in order to broaden one’s mentality, it is wise to look abroad for the top special- ists and cooperate with them.”
Liisa was admitted to the university in 1998 and today works here as a researcher. Periodically, she has studied abroad - in Greece, Norway
and recently in japan, studying lakes - but always comes back to Tallinn University. “What mostly keeps me here is the inspiring working environment,” admits Liisa. “For me, the university is a place where I am very happy to come to work in the morning.”
Liisa adds that she has definitely benefitted a lot from the experiences of studying and working abroad and it has broadened her outlook.
“I have seen student strikes in Greece and motivation in Norway. I can confirm that the japanese people are really very hard-working. One thing that can be learned from the japanese is that a student does not leave the laboratory until he or she has understood things very clearly.
In japan the expression “almost” doesn’t exist
- there you have to learn things 200%. At the same time, I was surprised at the language
skills of the japanese people” she says. “I was repeatedly asked whether English is our mother- tongue in Estonia. Probably they have a rather closed society, and therefore they can manage everywhere with japanese. So Estonians can only be proud that our outlook is richer because of our language skills.”
