The conference will bring together linguists, policymakers and teachers in order to discuss the current challenges Estonian schools are facing. Up to now, there have been two different schools in Estonia: one with Estonian and another with Russian as the tuition language. Now there’s a political decision to have only one tuition language, Estonian. At the same time the number of non-Estonian first languages has been rapidly increasing in schools with Estonian as the language of instruction.
War in Ukraine has speeded this process up even more: having linguistically and culturally diverse children in classrooms has become an everyday reality. In this complex situation the professional competence of teachers is crucial. In order to support teachers we need to bring together the results of linguistic research as well as good practices of different countries and languages.
The conference shall address issues of linguistics, education and language policy from different perspectives. Besides the general session of linguistics the conference also includes practical workshops for teachers as well as a round table with linguists, policymakers and teachers.
Conference plenary speakers are Annick De Houwer (The Harmonious Bilingualism Network (HaBilNet)), Mila Schwartz (Academic College of Education) and Claudine Kirsch (Université Du Luxembourg).

Proposals for workshops
We invite 600 word abstract submissions for a workshop including at least three 30-minute-long oral presentations. The abstracts must be in English or Estonian and they should be sent to langlearn.conf@tlu.ee
Paper presentations
We invite 400-word abstract submissions for 30-minute-long oral presentations (20 minutes for the presentation and 10 minutes for discussions). The abstracts must be in English or Estonian and they should be sent to langlearn.conf@tlu.ee Please specify if your abstract is intended for the main session or for the workshop.

Venue
The conference "Language and Languages. Learning and Teaching" will be held in Tallinn University 18-19 May, 2023. All campus buildings are connected to each other with glass corridors and there will be signs pointing directions to the Conference rooms. You will be able to access the free network connection called TLU in Tallinn University campus. Most of the cafes in town have free internet connection. All the hotel rooms also have WIFI. You can also use your institute’s eduroam account at Tallinn University.
Tallinn University is located 500 metres from UNESCO Heritage Site Tallinn Old Town and 500 metres from one of the biggest urban recreational parks in Estonia - Kadriorg. The university is located in the distance of 5 min walk from Tallinn harbour and 15 min by bus, tram or taxi from Tallinn Airport.
Conference venue is fully accessible for people with challenged mobility. It is equipped with wheelchair ramps, self-opening doors, speaking elevators and handicap toilets. Low-floor trams operate on the tram line to University with certain frequency.
