Possibilities for Internationalisation

In our globalised world, any international experience has a priceless value – it enables us to develop our social skills, widen our career prospects, broaden our horizons and cultural awareness and build relationships with people of different nationalities.
 
If for some reason it is not possible to go on studies abroad, then it is worth having a look at the possibilities for internationalisation and that are available at Tallinn University for students without having to leave your home university!
 

Study-related activities

  1. Courses in a foreign language: Tallinn University offers courses in a foreign language which, depending on your study programme, can be taken as university-wide, subject-specific or free elective courses by international as well as local students. Each study programme includes at least one course in a foreign language. If you want to have more information about such courses, please turn to your study counsellor or study programme administrator. It is possible to register for these courses provided there are free places. There is also a possibility to participate in lectures conducted by visiting international staff (pre-registration may be necessary).   2. Language courses: language courses can be taken as compulsory or free elective courses. Tallinn University offers English, German, Portuguese, French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Swedish, Finnish and other language courses.
  3. LIFE projects in English: LIFE projects of each semester also include projects in English where a group of international and local students work towards a common goal. The list of projects can be found here.
  4. Online courses and events organised by universities abroad: Some members of teaching staff enable and encourage their students to participate during their studies in online courses or events organised by universities abroad (also in MOOCs - Massive Open Online Course and SPOCs - Small Private Open Course). Before you register for such courses, please contact your study programme administrator to find out if and which course in your study programme can be replaced by it.
  5. Peer Support Programme as a free elective course: Peer supporters (student buddies) are students of Tallinn University who help international students settle in to local life, introduce local culture and help with university-related questions. Peer supporters can also take the course “Tutoring at University“ which gives 4 ECTS.
  6. Startup development programme STARTERtallinn: It is a free business idea development programme for students enabling to develop an idea into a business model within three months. Additional support is provided by best mentors in Estonia! The programme is in English and it was created by six universities in Tallinn (Tallinn University, Estonian Business School, Tallinn University of Technology, Estonian Academy of Arts, Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, Estonian Entrepreneurship University of Applied Sciences). The programme can be combined with a LIFE project.
  7. Training courses in a foreign language: training courses (including e-courses) organised in Tallinn University sometimes also include training courses in a foreign language. More information about the courses, prices and schedules can be found here.
  8. Study programmes in English (including joint study programmes): In addition to study programmes where the language of instruction is Estonian, Tallinn University offers study programmes in English on all study levels (including joint study programmes with universities abroad). Study programmes in English are fee-paying.
  9. Tallinn University Summer and Winter Schools: Every year, Tallinn University organises international summer and/or winter schools which local students are also welcome to join.

Free time and voluntary work

  1. International Club: Join Tallinn University International Club! The International Club brings together Estonian and international students to bring excitement into your life in Tallinn and at the university. The Club organises events and helps international students adjust to life in Tallinn. By joining the International Club you will be able to create new international contacts, gain valuable communication and counselling experience, practise languages and obtain skills in event organisation.
  2. Peer Support Programme and student buddies: Make new friends, learn about other cultures and practise your foreign language skills – become a student buddy for international students. Student buddies are students of Tallinn University who help international students settle in to local life, introduce local culture and help with university-related questions. 
  3. Welcome events organised by academic units: During the orientation week, every academic unit organises a welcome event for their students, first-year students as well as students from other years. Participating in these events gives a good opportunity to create new relationships and make friends.   4. Socialising events and free time activities: Tallinn University International Club and Erasmus Student Network organise exciting events and get-togethers all year round, and in addition to their members and international students they also welcome local students who have interest in internationalisation.
